OndÅ™ej Sekora (1899–1967) was an important illustrator and creator of children’s books, whose most famous heroes are still known to virtually every small child. At the same time, he left an unmistakable mark in the history of Czech journalism, sports, theater, audiovisual media and comics and is generally one of the most important creators of domestic popular culture of the first half of the twentieth century. This narrative monograph is divided into twelve chapters, which examine in detail the individual areas of Sekora’s extensive creative activities. Thanks to such a broad scope, but also due to access to Sekora’s archive and cooperation with a number of institutions holding Sekora’s works, the publication offers a much more comprehensive view of Sekora’s life and work than has been the case with this supposedly well-known creator. The monograph is accompanied by rich pictorial material; many originals and artifacts that have not yet been known to the general public have been reproduced, including his private paintings and study drawings. The book is published on the occasion of the 120th anniversary of the creator’s birth and at the same time as an accompaniment of the exhibition of the same name prepared by the Moravian Museum in Brno.
