Published posthumously as Dreams, Styrsky’s dream journal spanning the interwar years comprises prose, sketches, collages, and paintings. The present volume includes the complete series based on Styrsky’s layout for its publication, his sole volume of poetry (also published posthumously), as well as a selection of his essays, lectures, manifestos, and other text fragments. This edition presents in English for the first time the broad range of Styrsky’s contribution to the interwar avant-garde and Surrealism.
JindÅ™ich Å tyrský (1899-1942) was a painter, poet, editor, photographer, and collagist. His outstanding and varied oeuvre included numerous book covers and illustrations. He also wrote studies of both Rimbaud and Marquis de Sade. A member of Devetsil, he participated in their group exhibitions and in 1928-29 was director of the group’s drama wing, the “Liberated Theater.” In addition to his Edition 69 series, Styrsky also edited the Erotic Review, which he launched in 1930, and Odeon, where many of his shorter texts appeared. He was a founding member of the Surrealist Group of Czechoslovakia.
